Packing the right gear for a yoga trek in Nepal can make the difference between a comfortable, enjoyable experience and a miserable, uncomfortable one. The key is to pack light (maximum 10-12 kg in your duffel bag for porters) but include all essential items, especially warm layers. Here is our complete packing checklist based on years of experience guiding yoga treks in the Annapurna region.
Clothing: thermal base layers (top and bottom) - merino wool or synthetic, fleece jacket or pullover (mid-layer), lightweight down jacket (essential for early mornings at Poon Hill and higher altitudes), waterproof and windproof jacket (Gore-Tex recommended), waterproof trekking pants, comfortable trekking pants (2 pairs, quick-dry fabric), shorts for lower elevations and retreat center, yoga clothes (leggings, shorts, t-shirts) - bring 2-3 sets for daily practice, warm hat (beanie) that covers your ears, sun hat or cap with visor and neck flap, gloves (fleece liner gloves plus waterproof outer gloves for higher altitudes), thick wool socks (3-4 pairs), thin liner socks (3 pairs to prevent blisters), buff or neck gaiter (protects from sun, dust, and cold), and underwear (quick-dry recommended, 4-5 pairs).
Footwear: sturdy waterproof trekking boots with good ankle support - MUST be broken in before the trip (wear them for at least 20-30 km before arriving in Nepal), camp shoes (sandals or crocs for teahouses), and flip-flops for shared showers. Do not buy new boots right before your trek as they will cause painful blisters.
Gear and Equipment: duffel bag or backpack (70-90 liters) for porters (max 10-12 kg), daypack (20-30 liters for carrying water, snacks, camera, layers, and personal items during trekking), trekking poles (highly recommended - they reduce knee strain by up to 25% and help with balance on stone steps), headlamp with extra batteries (essential for early morning Poon Hill hike and nighttime bathroom trips), sleeping bag (comfort rated -10°C to 0°C) or sleeping bag liner for hygiene if using teahouse blankets, reusable water bottles (2 liters total capacity - we recommend stainless steel insulated bottles), water purification tablets or filter (to avoid buying plastic bottles), dry bags or zip-lock bags (to keep electronics, documents, and extra clothes dry), and packing cubes for organization.
Yoga specific items: yoga mat (optional - we provide mats at our retreat center, but bring your own travel mat if you prefer), yoga towel (lightweight quick-dry towel for practice), and comfortable stretchable clothing (no jeans or restrictive clothing for yoga sessions).
Accessories and Personal Items: sunglasses with UV protection (category 3 or 4 essential for snow glare at higher elevations), sunscreen SPF 30+ and lip balm with SPF, moisturizer and personal toiletries (biodegradable soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, wet wipes), quick-dry travel towel, small personal first aid kit (blister plasters, pain relievers (ibuprofen/paracetamol), antiseptic cream, anti-diarrhea medication, altitude medication (Diamox - consult your doctor), personal prescription medications), camera and extra batteries or power bank (cold drains batteries quickly), charging cables and adapter (Nepal uses Type C, D, and M plugs - 230V/50Hz), earplugs and sleep mask (for teahouse noise and light), playing cards, book, or journal for evening entertainment in teahouses, and passport, visa, travel insurance documents, and extra passport photos (for permits).
What NOT to pack: heavy jeans (take forever to dry, uncomfortable for trekking), cotton t-shirts (cotton kills - stays wet and causes hypothermia at altitude), too many clothes (pack for layers, not quantity), expensive jewelry, laptop or tablet (phones are sufficient for basic needs), hair dryer or curling iron (no reliable electricity at teahouses), and hard-shell suitcases (porters cannot carry them easily).
Rentals available in Pokhara: sleeping bags ($2-5 per day), down jackets ($2-4 per day), trekking poles ($1-2 per day), and duffel bags ($1-2 per day). Many shops in Lakeside area offer good quality rental gear. We can recommend trusted rental shops near our retreat center.
Remember, you can leave extra luggage (non-trekking clothes, suitcases, etc.) at our retreat center in Pokhara for free while you are on the trek. Pack smart, pack light, and focus on warm, quick-dry, layerable clothing. When in doubt, bring fewer clothes and more warm layers. You can always wash clothes at teahouses (extra fee, may not dry quickly at altitude). If you have any questions about specific items, feel free to contact us before your trip.
